Callies WIN!!!

Message
The boys put on a clinic today and crushed the Quebec team 3-1 to claim their second Challenge Cup in a row and 4th in 10 years!!
A superb free kick by Nic Reyes after 12 minutes destroyed Quebec's tactics of playing with a back 5. Callies controlled the play and could have been up by a couple if striker Felix Napuri could have capitalised on some quality chances. Other than missing the chances Felix had a superb game and was definitely one of the players of the game for the team. 1-0 at the half. Scary score, but in control.
Second half saw the boys come out  flying and running at the older, slower but bigger, nastier Quebec team. Another superb free kick by Mark Slade after only 4 minutes put the team up by 2 and half time sub Fran Miron used his skill and speed to cause a penalty after only 7 minutes into the second half!! Steffen Holdt slammed the ball into the net even though the GK got his hand on it. Lucky his hand didn't break, Steff hit it so hard!!
Quebec's tactic of falling over every time they got touched was backfiring on them as the crowd was definitely on their case and the ref should be commended for having none of it. They had a player sent off from the field after 60 minutes and also a player on the bench ejected after 75 mnutes. However the Callies, despite being told not to, dropped the pace a little and Quebec scored to make it 3-1 after 65 minutes. Another poorly defended free kick. GK Dave Harrison pulled off a superb save in the 80th minute to deny Quebec another goal. It was really the only other chance they had as the team, somewhat nervously, knocked the ball around and ran out winners!!
Repeating at any level is very difficult and credit should be given to all the veterans on the team for the committment and attitude they display on the field. Hopefully the young guys can learn from the example and carry on over the next few years!!

Nobody has ever won 3 in a row. Thats the challenge for the team now.

Many thx to all for your support over the season!!

Day off, Sunday Oct 12

The team had a day off today and waited for news of the final opponents. We were treated to lunch by Mr. Bill deSilva out in St. Phillips. Beautiful place right next to the ocean. I will post a pic if I can get it sorted!!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our travelling fans!! Coming to St. Johns shows great committment and is much appreciated. Shout out to the deSilva, Slade and Kooy families for making the trek. Its always nice to see a few friendly faces in the crowd. We have also had some great support form CUSA rep Bill Malone and ASA rep Mike Traficante, both of these venerable gentlemen have been a big help.

On to the final v Quebec in what promises to be a very tough, physical battle!! I think we're up to it!! I think the locals will support us which should help as well.

Game 4 v Manitoba

Message
Callies continued their good form today as we dominated Hellas FC from Manitoba and ran out 3-1 winners. With only 2 vetereans, Cenek Patik and Chris Kooy, in the starting 11, it gave the youngsters plenty of opportunity to show what they could do. And they responded with a superb performance. The team conceeded a soft one at a free kick after 19 minutes despite dominating possession against a Manitoba team that was approaching the game in a very physical manner. Showing tremendous character the young guys responded with a Milan Timotejevic goal after 22 minutews after a superb cross from Cody Cook. 10 minutes later Ben Duffy converted a tremendous Cook corner to take the lead at 2-1.
Second half saw the Manitoba side throw everything at the young guys but they held firm and knocked the ball around with aplomb to frustrate the opponents.
Brett Colvin sealed the win with a breakaway goal in the 86th minute. Deserved winners and a message sent to the veterans that they need to stay sharp in order to keep their starting spots!!

The team now has a couple of days off and awaits to find out their opponents for the Challenge Cup final on Monday at 1.00pm Local ( 9.30 am MDT)

Game 3 v NS

Message
Callies made history today as they qualified for their 3rd Challenge Cup Final in a row. In a wild contest played in gale force winds on the soaking wet field turf at King George V field we beat Halifax City 4-3 to clinch the spot!!
    A character win indeed!!
Callies started with the wind behind their backs and in complete control against a very defensive minded NS team who played 4-5-1 and didn't want to venture forward very much. A Chris Kooy goal after 20 minutes at a corner seemed to settle the team down and all looked good.
The first 20 minutes of the second half carried on as the first with Callies in control but unable to finish. The wind was getting stronger and affecting play big time!! After 25 minutes of the second half NS scored a flukey goal at a corner to tie it at 1 and then the game went crazy!! 5 minutes later Steffen Holdt scored a 20 yd left foot rocket into the bottom corner for Callies 2-1. 5 minutes later NS scored after a bad Callies giveaway to make it 2-2. 5 minutes later Steff scored an even better rocket with his right foot, from 30 yards, to make it 3-2 Callies. 5 minutes later NS scored to make it 3-3 after 86 minutes after a poorly defended free kick into the box. We all thought the game would finish tied but Brett Colvin scored a superb free kick goal, in injury time, from 25 yds as he bent it around the wall into the top corner!! 4-3 Callies at the end and the place in the final was clinched!! A nail biter for sure.

After commending the back 4 on how well they have played recently it was disappointing to see how they performed in front of Will Langford today. All 3 NS goals were the result of mental errors. We will have to be better on Monday in the final!! I expect us to be!!
